Guide to Aromatherapy Essential Oils

Distilled from flowers, leaves, stems, bark or the wood of aromatic plants and trees, esssential oils are the most potent form of the aromatic and fragrant material. The oils are not greasy or fatty in the ordinary sense of the word, but volatile, highly concentrated, chemically complex substances. Such is the complex chemical structure of the oils they are impossible to replicate synthetically and are therefore, truly natural substances.
The oils have specific actions and effects, many of which are medicinal. For example, Tea Tree oil is a powerful antiseptic/antifungal whilst others have powerful anti viral and antibiotic properties. Some oils are natural stimulants (for example, the producers of male Ageless Male claim that they use the correct oil, but this is not always the case, more than read here - ageless male) and others directly affect moods and are able to calm emotions. It is always advisable to give yourself a patch-test on a small area of skin.
Oils are flammable - keep away from naked flame
The beneficial effects of Homoeopathic remedies may cancelled by the strong aroma of essential oils.
Some oils are solvents and may damage plastics and polished surfaces
If you suffer skin allergies use oils very carefully and patch-test before using widely. Note that in general, if you suffer allergic reaction to perfume you are likely to suffer an allergic reaction to all essential oils.
If in doubt consult a qualified Aromatherapist
Mix 2 drops oil with 285ml pure spring water. For fresh breath suitable oils include Mint and Lemon. For mouth infections and gum problems use Tea Tree oil. Do not swallow the mouth wash.
Use oils with a preparatory oil vaporiser or add to a bowl of pot pourri. Most oils can be used for room fragrance however, some are particularly suitable for specific purposes including:
Infection : Use Mint, Tea Tree, Eucalyptus and Rosemary, Lavender and Lemon.
Meditation : Cedarwood and Sandalwood
Romance : Ylang Ylang, Geranium, Sandalwood
Sleep : Chamomile, Lavender, Sandalwood
Stimulation : Geranium, Lemon, Peppermint
As an aid to sleep
Put 1-2 drops on a handkerchief or tissue and place near your pillow. Suitable oils are Chamomile, Lavender, Sandalwood and Ylang Ylang.
